The public introduction to a comic about early BSD recounts how Bill Joy distributed Pascal and ex as an add-on collection for existing Unix in 1977. User feedback informed 2BSD, which added tools including vi, and Ozalp Babaoglu and Joy later integrated virtual memory into VAX Unix. The resulting kernel and ported tools shipped as 3BSD in December 1979. McKusick’s historical account corroborates this development. Unlike today’s permissive BSD licensing, these early distributions required an AT&T Unix source license.
