Google Health 5.11 has begun expanding automatic activity detection from ten activities to more than 100 on Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch 3, 4 and 5. It combines workout history, user corrections and permitted location information, logging activities that sustain an elevated heart rate beyond a minimum duration and usually notifying the user within 30 minutes. Confirmations and corrections inform subsequent predictions. The claim of nearly twice the detection accuracy comes from Google, not independent testing. The iOS app is widely available, while Android is rolling out gradually; Fitbit Edge is also supported.
