The Keep Android Open campaign argues that identity registration, fees, and a 24-hour wait for unverified installations create barriers for independent and anonymous developers. Its open letter and petition defend owners’ freedom to install software, but the site’s worldwide-lockdown countdown was not verified as a firm implementation date. Google’s official guidance describes an advanced flow allowing unverified installations for seven days or indefinitely after a restart and one-day wait. It also describes accounts for students and hobbyists to distribute to up to 20 devices without government ID or a fee. Campaign claims and documented exceptions therefore need to be distinguished.
