Tesla and PG&E are expanding Flex Connect, which adjusts charging-site output to available grid capacity. An October trial in Northern California uses V4 cabinets that receive forecast supply limits from the utility through IEEE 2030.5 communication. Tesla says connection could happen more than two years sooner than waiting for conventional upgrades, but sites must accept output restrictions when power is scarce. This does not eliminate grid reinforcement; it conditionally uses available power before construction.

Tesla and PG&E test charging connections tied to grid power limits
Sites may connect before grid upgrades, but their supply limits can fall during congested periods.
