A developer reported 37,856 leftover app clones after repeatedly force-stopping headless Chrome, with Mac startup appearing stuck near 5% for up to about 40 minutes. Chromium source confirms temporary app cloning and cleanup during normal shutdown, but the full duration of the delay was not experimentally explained. In the author’s Chrome 155 tests, disabling MacAppCodeSignClone prevented leftover clones. The issue concerns installed Chrome rather than Playwright’s default testing browsers. Any existing —disable-features list must be combined with the new option rather than overwritten.

Headless Chrome app clones linked to a Mac boot-delay case
Tools that repeatedly force-stop installed Chrome should check temporary clones and existing launch options.
