Pinterest has changed its recommendation journey generator to infer ongoing goals from user activity. It fine-tuned Qwen3 4B on synthetic data from larger models and processes up to 360 days of activity into structured goals. In company experiments, email clicks improved 1.1% and push opens 1.3% against the previous clustering approach. Those figures use a different baseline from earlier comparisons with interest-based recommendations. Inferred intent from observed behavior does not mean the system always knows a user’s actual goals.
