Shitter is presented as a free, open-source X frontend forked from Nitter, removing JavaScript and advertisements while proxying requests through a server. It supports RSS, themes and mobile layouts, reducing direct connections from the browser to X. Access to the source repository was blocked, but the maintainer’s Docker documentation confirms Redis and configuration requirements, including creating the session file before using Compose. It is therefore different from a simple browser-blocking extension, and the speed gains in its introduction should not be treated as independently verified benchmarks.

Reducing direct browser connections still requires cache and session configuration for self-hosting.
