Ten-year results from 108 adults with stage-3 chronic kidney disease and metabolic acidosis were presented at a nephrology meeting. The fruit-and-vegetable group, intended to reduce dietary acid load, reportedly had fewer hospitalizations, emergency visits and progressions to dialysis than usual care. These conference findings in a small, specific group cannot be generalized to all kidney disease or used to replace prescribed medication. Food types and portions should be tailored with the treating team and dietitian to potassium levels, kidney function and other conditions.

Kidney-disease diet findings do not justify replacing medication
A small stage-3 metabolic-acidosis study requires individualized potassium and kidney-function assessment.
