Developer Ben Calderon describes using arp-scan to locate hard-to-remember local device addresses and inspect their IP addresses, MAC addresses, and manufacturers. ARP asks a device with a particular IP on the same network for its MAC address, and operating systems store responses in a neighbor cache. Official documentation says the tool targets IPv4 hosts on local Ethernet and wireless networks and can discover devices even when they block IP traffic. It does not enumerate the entire internet or guarantee a complete list of all devices; troubleshooting should account for the connected interface and whether devices respond.

Useful for finding router-assigned addresses, but responses represent IPv4 discovery on the same local network.
