The US FCC says it has, for the first time, blocked two pieces of equipment because they contain chips from a company on its national security risk list. The components described are camera-processing SoCs from Huawei affiliate HiVision, and the stated aim is to close a route around restrictions based on the final manufacturer’s name alone. The agency did not disclose the specific finished-product models it blocked. Descriptions of surveillance capabilities should be distinguished from proof of actual covert intelligence collection. For suppliers, the change calls for checking component supply chains and applicable certification conditions as well as the finished product.

Embedding a restricted component in another company's product may not put it outside certification scrutiny.
