A Home Assistant case study describes replacing automations that checked every condition at fixed intervals with state-change and event-driven triggers. The approach checks whether devices are connected, cushions repeated changes in a short period, and retains a slow periodic check to recover missed events. Changing automation triggers does not eliminate polling performed by an integration itself. Increasing the interval between saving records may reduce disk writes, but can lose the most recent records before a failure. Improvements in temperature and load reflect the author’s experience, rather than a measured general rate of savings.
