Teal adds static type constructs including arrays, maps, records, interfaces, and generics to Lua and translates them into ordinary Lua code. It emphasizes interoperability with the existing Lua ecosystem and is available under the MIT license. The compiler repository describes support for Lua 5.1 through 5.4 and LuaJIT. In particular, tl check performs type checking, whereas tl gen does not replace a full type check. Successful code generation during a build should therefore not be treated as proof that type safety has been verified.
